REPUBLIC OF RWANDA

DISTRICT RUSIZI
HEALTHCARE CENTER St FRANÇOIS RUSIZI

AID PROJECT FOR THE  HEALTHCARE CENTER St FRANÇOIS RUSIZI

1. DESCRIPTION AN HISTORY

The Healthcare Center St. François in Rusizi is a legally recognised Healthcare center of the sisters penitents of St. Francis of Assisi.(1)
The Center has been operational since 1989 and serves a population of approximately 20.624 inhabitants. It is situated in the administrative district of Rusizi in the Westprovince.
Since 2004 the center has been providing medical care to patients suffering from HIV/AIDS. Nowadays we are treating every month 1700 ambulant sick and we hospitalize on average some 80 patients. Their stay at our center however is limited to a maximum of 3 days. If  they recover within this period, they are sent at home, otherwise they are transferred to the hospital. Moreover, there is a constant follow up of 456 patients. 154 of them are treated with anti-retroviral medicines (2), while 286 others are treated with cotrimoxazole (3).  More than 60% of the old cases are women and the vast majority are widows.
In the past the Healthcare Center was well equipped, but during the war it suffered of pillage and many other problems. Nowadays we urgently need 60 sheets for 30 beds. Many infected sick suffer from diarrhea, 10 rolls Waterproof bed sheeting to protector the mattresses would be very welcome.
Actually the Healthcare Center should be self-supporting. Unfortunately, the new government policy encourages people to adhere to the national health service.  However the patients' co-payment amounts to € 1 000, which leads many people to poverty. This is the reason why we are not able to purchase anymore the medicines to treat our sick. Consequently the situation is becoming unsustainable for Caritas, and we are almost bankrupt.
Up to now we have been still able to pay the personnel, but we can barely guarantee the functioning of the Center and assure hygiene and cleanliness. Therefore we urgently need soap, brushes, scrub sliders, sheets, towels, waterproof bed sheeting for the maternity ward and a boiler for washing the linen, etc....

Visit on Monday 02.01.2012: an acquaintance with the disabled. The maternity ward allows us to see that there is much progress, in comparison with the 'Center' in Mbogora – Burundi. But needs are sure and here also packages with medical equipment are very much appreciated. We spend some time with Donata, the responsible for the Centre. It is striking that there are also needs we have no knowledge of. Bandages, medications and other medical material for physiotherapy in order to ensure a proper functioning are missing to a large extent.
